Inside of Village Saunda
Though the village has all the basic infrastructural amenities such as hand-pumps and tap water facilities, electricity, drainage system, yet not all living there have an access to the same. About 10% of the households practise open defecation as they do not have toilets within their premises. The drainage system is open and the village doesnot have a very high standards in cleanliness. A major reason is that local people do not consider the issues of hygiene and cleanliness important enough for consideration.
SADRAG in implementation partnership with HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company through CAF India is initiating a long term Village Development Plan for Saunda. The major componemts under the VDP are envisaged as Health & Sanitation, Skill Development & Livelihood and Literacy & Education.
To begin with, a few areas of intervention having been initiated are:
Strengthening the existing Anganwadi Centres:
In village Saunda, around 150 children in age up to 6 years attend Anganwadi centres under ICDS programme of the Govt. of India. The centres would be equipped with teaching learning resources, seating arrangement, toys and games for an optimum growth and development of children.
Rejuvenation of Community Water Bodies:
The existing water bodies in village Saunda are either decayed or are encroached upon by the local people.
Decaying Water Body in Saunda waiting to be rejuvenated
There is no water body in the community. Therefore revival of an existing water body, measuring 1000Sq.Ft. would be done through rejuvenation and recharge of water. A water Drainage system would be established to reduce environmental pollution for a healthy living.
Provision of Sanitation facility:
The 10% population practicing open defecation would be covered with an aim to declare Saunda, a village free of Open Defecation.
Survey for Household Identification under Sanitation intervention
Construction of toilets at home and a robust campaign for the use of toilets by the people who are being selected on the criterion of number of women & young girls in the household, a differently able member and the occupation & income levels.
The Implementation is facilitated through a Partnership Model as follows:
- An active partnership with local panchayat institutions and key members of the community.
- Engagement with community through volunteering and active involvement in development work.
- Mobilizing the community for behavioral change to adopt and use the available facilities.
